It is an accepted fact worldwide: men are generally less concerned with fashion as women are. On the average, a lady spends more time and money on her looks than a man would on his. Of course, there will always be the outliers - men who seem more concerned with their looks than women are, and in fact the term 'metrosexual' has really gained popularity in recent times - but generally these statements are true. But whether you are one of those highly meticulous guys or just an average Joe, there are certain rules you can follow to look well, and there are also certain mistakes that can ruin an otherwise good attire. It doesn't take too much effort so better look at these worst fashion mistakes men can do.
First, never go out in public in dirty clothes! Your clothes don't need to be expensive, but they have to be CLEAN! As in freshly washed; or at least hasn't received its fair amount of perspiration and sweat. There is nothing more discouraging than a smelly person, no matter how nice and expensive his clothes may be. Ironing your clothes will also go a long way, as it also gives a refreshing scent to your look. You may not look at ironing as a very important step but a good suit can be easily ruined by some crease. Making sure that you smell good is also key. It doesn't mean that you have to be bathed in the most expensive perfume, but at the least you should not smell of anything.
Next, be careful with the accessories you use. If you are not savvy with color combinations, then you might want to stick to the safer silhouettes - black, blue, brown, tan, cream - and just vary the shades from one piece to another. You can then accent this with a good striped necktie or a simple solid cufflink. Unless you are sure with the color combinations you will be wearing, it will be easier to stick to old school attires. A very good-looking man will not be remembered for his looks if he wears a green necktie over a pink shirt.
There used to be a time when striped shirts and striped pants did not work, but nowadays it is very common to pair up a striped shirt to a pair of differently striped pants. The dots, however, hasn't received this same recognition, so better not wear polka dots to the board room, or to a date. It might make you look like a clown.
Last but not the least - check your manners. This may have nothing to do with fashion but it certainly has an effect to the impression you will be giving out. The nicest dressed man will not receive praises if he behaves rudely, and worse, lewdly. Whether on a date, in a meeting, out at lunch or just plain walking the streets, rude manners are not welcome, and are frowned upon. Having good manners does not cost a dime (but it takes years to develop), and will outweigh good fashion, anytime.
